Background
Antonia Quinlivan was called to the Bar in 2022. Her main area of practice is medical negligence (common law, personal injury claims and intentional torts). Antonia also practises in general insurance and construction law. Antonia facilitates expert conclaves.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Antonia practised as a solicitor in health and medical law teams for both plaintiff and defendant firms. Antonia has experience in a number of areas of health law including professional indemnity, disciplinary proceedings and coronial inquests. In 2021, Antonia was Tipstaff to the Honourable Justice Julia Lonergan of the Supreme Court of NSW.
Antonia acts for public health authorities, private hospital, individual practitioners and allied health practitioners in both public and private practice.
Antonia appears in all NSW Courts, from the Local Court to the Court of Appeal.
Antonia also holds a Master of Health Law.
Outside chambers, Antonia is a keen fitness enthusiast, a dog lover and is focused on her family.

Dean v Pope [2023] HCATrans 88
On 16 June 2023, Antonia Quinlivan appeared with Richard Cheney SC in the High Court of Australia for the respondent, a neurosurgeon, on an application for special leave brought by his former patient, the plaintiff below. The plaintiff / applicant challenged the decision of five judges of the NSW Court of Appeal that upheld the primary judge’s dismissal of the plaintiff’s case: Dean v Pope [2022] NSWCA 260. The applicant argued that the Court of Appeal had misconstrued section 5O of the Civil Liability Act 2002 (NSW). Special leave was refused.

Antonia Quinlivan appeared with Richard Cheney SC for the neurosurgeon. The Court sat five judges to consider the respondent’s challenge to an aspect of an earlier decision of the Court regarding the competent professional practice defence in s 5O of the Civil Liability Act 2002 (NSW).
